A Hand-Laid Pattern Across a Full Driveway

This new double-storey home in Clifton Springs called for a driveway with more character than a plain slab — natural stone cobblestones, laid in overlapping fan patterns across the full width from the street to the garage.

A fan pattern only works if every arc is set out consistently. Each cobble is placed by hand, and over a surface this size small variations add up quickly. The goal was arcs that stay even and joints that stay tight from one side of the driveway to the other.

/Scope of work

What the project involved

  • Setting out the fan pattern across the driveway
  • Laying natural stone cobblestones by hand in overlapping arcs
  • Filling the joints between the cobbles
  • Sealing and cleaning down the finished surface

/Our approach

One continuous pattern, laid by hand

The driveway was treated as one continuous pattern rather than a series of patches, with the set-out done before a single cobble went down.

01

Set out the pattern

The fan arcs were set out across the full width of the driveway first, so the pattern stays consistent from edge to edge.

02

Lay the cobbles by hand

Each natural stone cobble was placed by hand, working along the arcs to keep the curves even and the joints tight.

03

Fill the joints

The joints between the cobbles were filled, holding the stones in place and giving the surface a clean, finished look.

04

Seal and clean down

The finished surface was sealed and cleaned down, ready for the new home’s first cars through the gate.

/Common questions

Questions about cobblestone driveways

A fan pattern lays small stone cobbles in overlapping arcs, so the surface reads as a series of curved fans rather than straight rows. It’s a traditional paving pattern that suits both classic and modern homes.

Natural stone is dense and hard-wearing, and every piece has its own colour and texture, so the finished driveway has a variation and character that a plain concrete or uniform paver surface doesn’t.

Filling the joints holds the cobbles in place, helps keep weeds and debris out, and gives the surface its finished look.

Sealing is commonly used on stone driveways to help resist staining from oil and dirt and to make the surface easier to keep clean. Whether it suits your driveway is something we talk through as part of the quote.

/The result

A Driveway With Character, Laid by Hand

Natural stone arcs running the full width of the driveway, giving the new home a distinctive first impression from the street.
