/The challenge

A Natural Stone Wall for an Outdoor Kitchen

This home in Clifton Springs has an alfresco area built for entertaining — an outdoor kitchen under a timber-lined ceiling, set against a full-height feature wall. The wall was finished in random-cut natural stone to give the space warmth and texture.

Random-cut stone has no repeating pattern, which is exactly what makes it hard to get right. Every piece has to be chosen and fitted against its neighbours so the joints stay consistent and the wall reads as balanced, rather than busy or patchy.

/Scope of work

What the project involved

  • Checking and preparing the wall surface
  • Laying out the random-cut stone pieces across the wall
  • Fixing the stone to the wall
  • Grouting and finishing the joints and edges

/Our approach

Built up piece by piece

With no pattern to follow, the wall was built up piece by piece, with the layout worked out as the stone went on.

01

Prepare the wall

The wall surface was checked and prepared so the stone had a sound, flat base to fix to.

02

Lay out the stone

The random-cut pieces were laid out and matched by shape and tone, so the finished wall looks balanced across its full width.

03

Fix each piece

Each piece of stone was fixed to the wall, keeping the joints between neighbouring pieces as even as possible.

04

Grout and finish

The joints and edges were grouted and finished, tying the stone together into one continuous surface.

/Common questions

Questions about natural stone feature walls

Random-cut stone — often called crazy paving — uses irregular pieces of natural stone fitted together without a repeating pattern. It gives a relaxed, natural look that suits outdoor areas and feature walls.

Yes. Natural stone is often used for feature walls, both indoors and in alfresco areas, as long as the wall is prepared properly and the fixing method suits the weight and type of stone.

Many natural stones are porous, so sealing is often recommended in outdoor areas and near cooking zones to help resist stains. The right approach depends on the stone and is something we talk through as part of the quote.

Because there’s no set pattern, each piece has to be selected and fitted against the ones around it. That extra care is what keeps the joints consistent and the wall looking balanced.

/The result

A Feature Wall That Anchors the Outdoor Kitchen

Natural stone across the full height of the wall, giving the alfresco area a warm, textured backdrop.
