Natural Texture Against Clean White Joinery

This new kitchen in Werribee pairs flat white cabinetry with a stone benchtop. Between them, the splashback was finished in travertine laid in a brick pattern, adding natural texture to an otherwise clean, minimal space.

A brick-pattern splashback runs the full length of the kitchen, so the courses need to stay level and the joints consistent from one end to the other. Cuts around power points and cabinetry have to be neat too — on a splashback, every one of them is at eye level.

/Scope of work

What the project involved

  • Setting out the brick pattern along the length of the splashback
  • Cutting the travertine neatly around power points and cabinetry
  • Fixing the travertine to the wall
  • Grouting and finishing the edges

/Our approach

Set out first, then fixed

The splashback was set out before any stone went on the wall, so the pattern sits evenly between the benchtop and the overhead cabinets.

01

Set out the courses

The brick pattern was set out along the full length of the splashback so the courses run level and the cuts land in sensible places.

02

Cut around the details

The travertine was cut neatly around power points and the edges of the cabinetry, where every cut is on show.

03

Fix the travertine

Each piece was fixed to the wall, keeping the brick-pattern joints straight and consistent.

04

Grout and finish

The joints and edges were grouted and finished for a clean line against the benchtop and cabinetry.

/Common questions

Questions about travertine splashbacks

Travertine brings natural colour variation and texture that suits kitchens with simple joinery. As a natural stone, it’s usually sealed in a kitchen to help it resist splashes and stains.

A brick (or stretcher) pattern offsets each row by half a tile, like brickwork. It’s a timeless layout that works with both natural stone and ceramic tiles.

The tiles are cut around each power point so the cover plate sits neatly over the tile edge. Setting out the pattern first helps keep those cuts tidy and consistent.

Yes. Splashback tiling can be booked on its own, or as part of a larger kitchen renovation.
