Set out the grid
The pedestal positions were set out on the base slab to match the size of the pavers.
/The challenge
This outdoor terrace was finished with large-format pavers laid on a pedestal tiling system. Instead of being bedded onto the slab, each paver sits on adjustable pedestals that support it at the corners, creating a raised, level surface.
Outdoor slabs are usually laid with a fall so water can run off, which means the surface underneath isn’t level. The challenge was bringing the finished surface to a true level on top of it, with every paver sitting flat and the joints running straight across the terrace.

/Our approach
The pedestal grid was set out to suit the paver size, then each pedestal was adjusted so the finished surface sits level.
The pedestal positions were set out on the base slab to match the size of the pavers.
Each adjustable pedestal was raised or lowered to bring the finished surface to level over the slab’s fall.
The large-format pavers were laid onto the pedestals, each one supported at its corners.
The finished surface was checked across the terrace so every paver sits flat and the joints run straight.

/Common questions
It’s a system of adjustable supports that sit on a base slab and hold outdoor pavers at their corners. Each pedestal can be raised or lowered, so the pavers form a level surface above the slab.
Pedestals let the finished surface sit level even when the slab underneath has a fall, and they leave space beneath the pavers for water to drain away.
Because the pavers aren’t fixed to the slab, individual pavers can generally be lifted if access to the surface underneath is needed.
They’re commonly used on balconies, rooftop terraces and outdoor areas built over a slab or membrane, where both a level surface and good drainage are needed.

/The result
Large-format pavers sitting flat on an adjustable pedestal system, with a clean, level finish across the terrace.
