What tiling involves

Tiling is more than sticking tiles to a wall or floor. Before anything goes down, the existing surface is checked to make sure it's actually suitable — is it level, is it sound, does it need screeding or waterproofing first. Then comes the set-out: working out where the tiles will fall across the room so cuts land in sensible places rather than as an afterthought at the last wall.

From there it's installation, grouting, and finishing off the details that make a tiling job look properly done — edges, corners, and around fixtures like taps, drains and skirting.

Surface preparation comes first

Whatever's under the tiles matters as much as the tiles themselves.

Before tiling starts, we check the condition of the substrate — the surface the tiles will actually sit on. That might be an existing concrete slab, floorboards, villaboard, or an old tiled surface being tiled over. If it's uneven, cracked, or not structurally sound, that needs addressing before a single tile goes down, or the finished job won't sit flat and won't last.

In wet areas — bathrooms, laundries, and areas with showers or floor wastes — preparation may involve screeding to establish the required levels and falls, followed by waterproofing before tiling. On a straightforward dry-area job, preparation might just mean confirming the existing surface is clean, flat and ready to tile onto.

Ceramic, porcelain, mosaic and natural stone tiles

We supply all four, or we're happy to work with tiles you've already chosen. Which one fits comes down to the room, the surface, and how it gets used.

Ceramic tiles

A common, practical choice for bathroom and kitchen walls and floors — generally easier to cut on site, which suits detailed layouts.

Porcelain tiles

Dense and hard-wearing, so they hold up well on floors and in higher-traffic areas.

Mosaic tiles

Small-format tiles that suit feature walls, shower niches and splashbacks, where detail and a fine finish matter.

Natural stone tiles

Stone tiles for walls and floors with a natural finish, with the laying and sealing talked through as part of the quote.

Wall tiling and floor tiling aren't the same job

Floor tiling has to deal with weight, foot traffic, and — in wet areas — the correct fall so water actually reaches the drain instead of pooling against a wall or door. Wall tiling is more about layout and finish: keeping cut tiles out of obvious sightlines, working cleanly around taps, niches and showerheads, and finishing edges so they don't look like an afterthought.

The set-out is worked out before installation starts, not adjusted on the fly, so the finished layout sits where it's meant to and the cuts end up somewhere sensible — behind a door, low on a wall, not staring you in the face when you walk in.

Where tiling gets used

Tiling is supplied for bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and general living areas, as its own job or as part of a larger renovation.

Bathrooms

Wall and floor tiling as part of a bathroom renovation, or re-tiling a shower or floor on its own.

Kitchens

Splashback tiling and floor tiling, either standalone or as part of a kitchen renovation.

Laundries

Practical, water-resistant floor and wall tiling for laundry spaces.

Living areas

Floor tiling for hallways, entries and general living spaces.

What we'll need from you

A rough idea of the room and its size, whether the existing surface is being tiled over or stripped back, and whether you've already picked a tile or want some guidance on what suits the space. Photos of the area help too, if you've got them.
